At the School Minibus Company we specialise in minibus leasing to schools, colleges, academies and universities, and we know the safety of your students and passengers is paramount so we have compiled a vehicle maintenance checklist which can be referred to before a journey. If you would like to download a hard copy please visit our download zone on our website.
The School Minibus Company recommends that the driver walks around the minibus, prior to any journey to check for noticeable defects. These checks are vital for highlighting any potential minibus problems which can then be actioned to prevent any issues which may otherwise compromise the safety of your students and passengers.
Your vehicle maintenance check list should always include:
Lights – Ensure the minibus lights, indicators, reflectors and number plates are clean and clear. Lights must be properly adjusted to prevent dazzling other road users.
Fluid Levels – Check oil, water, brake and coolant levels are correct.
Tyres – Check your tyres. The owner’s manual supplied by the vehicle manufacturer will indicate the recommended tyre pressure for your minibus. According to the Belt Up School Kids (BUSK) campaign, the most reoccurring common fault affecting minibuses, is under-inflated tyres.
Brakes – Check brakes and handbrake before loading passengers. With the engine running, check the handbrake is working properly and brake pedal is firm when pushed. Where possible safely attempt an emergency stop ensuring the brakes are working efficiently and any luggage is securely fixed.
Seatbelts – The law requires all minibuses carrying three or more children on organised trips between the ages of 3 and 16 years are required to be fitted with forward facing seats and seatbelts
Emergency Supplies – Ensure your minibus is equipped with a fully stocked first aid kit and a fire extinguisher.
In addition to the vehicle maintenance checks before each journey, the following areas should be checked by someone with sufficient knowledge to identify potential worn or defective parts:
- Tyre, clutch and brake wear
- Engine noise
- Exhaust emissions
- Seat and belt conditions
- Vehicle body condition
Comprehensive records should be kept detailing when vehicle maintenance checks were carried out, the results of the checks, and what work, if any, was done and by whom.
The minibus driver is personally responsible for any defects the minibus may have while it is on the road. Therefore a vehicle maintenance check is essential before each journey begins. If a Police Officer was to notice a defect during a vehicle inspection which could have been picked up by the driver prior to the journey, then the driver is liable to a fixed penalty and possible prosecution.
